Round 16 of the Victorian Premier League got off to a disappointing start, with the postponement of Friday night;s VPL LIVE broadcast match, Bentleigh Greens versus Northcote City, due to a water logged pitch.

Despite the inclement weather, the Richmond versus Melbourne Knights match at Kevin Bartlett Reserve went ahead.  Melbourne Knights’ goalkeeper, Sebastian Mattei thwarted the hosts on numerous occasions in a brilliant display from the young goalkeeper. The 1-1 draw was a fitting score line for a very even match.

Richmond is still holding on to top spot, despite having not won a match since round 13.

The most anticipated match of the round saw two of the most-improved clubs in recent rounds go head-to-head at Paisley Park Soccer Complex, Altona Magic versus the Green Gully Cavaliers. It turned out to be a one-sided affair, with the Green Gully Cavaliers continuing their great form, winning 4-1.  Joshua Groenewald scored a brace for the visitors, with Jason Hayne and Graham Hockless chipping in for one each.

In a thrilling contest at Kingston Heath Soccer Complex on Sunday afternoon, Dandenong Thunder overcame South Melbourne, 3-2.

Dandenong shot out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to Jamie Reed and Scott Bulloch, but South Melbourne hit back in the second half with two quick goals of their own to Kyle Joryeff and Steve O’Dor. Reed slotted home the winner in the 66th min via a penalty.

South Melbourne’s Rama Tavsancioglu and Dandenong’s Luke Sherbon will be missing next round after receiving red cards.

Round 16 continued on Monday night with Sunshine George Cross hosting Hume City at Knights Stadium, and the Oakleigh Cannons going up against Heidelberg United at Jack Edwards Reserve.

Sunshine attempted a brave comeback against an under-manned Hume City, but time was against them, and they eventually succumbed, 2-1.  The much-needed win was Hume City's first win since round 11, and puts them back to third place on the table. Sunshine George Cross are languishing in 11th spot, having not won a match since round nine.

Heidelberg United is continuing their amazing form, defeating second-placed Oakleigh tonight. George Slefendorfas has been a revelation since joining the club a month or two ago, and he was the difference tonight, scoring in 17th minute.
